Senior Associate Solicitor - Building & Construction - 5+ years

Established for 17 years in Newcastle; we’re now offering our experience and expertise to clients in Sydney, and we can’t keep up with the demand! That’s where you come in.

We’re looking for a driven Senior Associate level Solicitor to join our team in Sydney and contribute to its continuing growth. Having only established our Sydney offices in late 2022, there is a real opportunity for the right person to secure a path to partnership and become a genuine leader of the firm.  We can offer you a competitive salary (with monthly commissions based on performance), the opportunity to work with experts in Building & Construction Law, a collaborative work environment, and the opportunity to be a part of a highly regarded Commercial Litigation Team with a significant Building & Construction Law practice.

About the role

Our Litigation Team includes 3 Accredited Specialists in Commercial Litigation making it one of the most recognised Commercial Litigation teams in NSW.

Your team leader,Tony Peterson is an Accredited Specialist, who is based in our Newcastle office. Tony will provide you with mentorship, but you will also have autonomy as the most senior member of the Building & Construction Law team in our Sydney office. You will take the lead on complex matters, providing valuable support to clients in relation both the commercial and residential construction matters.

We are focused on continuous improvement and have excellent processes, procedures and an experienced support team to ensure your time and skills are being utilised where they will have the biggest impact on our clients, the firm and the advancement of your career.

You will advise and represent developers, contractors, subcontractors and homeowners, and act in relation to a wide range of Building & Construction Law issues as well as general commercial disputes. Responsibilities will include:

  • conducting Fixed Fee Initial Consultations with new clients;
  • advising clients in relation to commercial and residential construction contracts and subcontracts;
  • advising and acting for clients in relation to the administration of construction contracts and disputes concerning delays, defects and other common construction problems;
  • assisting clients in relation to Payment Claims, Payment Schedules and Adjudication Applications under NSW Security of Payment Laws as well as the enforcement of statutory debts;
  • representing clients in relation to proceedings in the Supreme Court, District Court and NSW Civil & Administrative Tribunal;
    establishing and developing strong client and referral relationships,
  • supervision of another Solicitor in the Commercial Litigation team located in Sydney.

About you

In addition to technical skills, we are looking for someone who is a great cultural fit and aligns with our values. Whilst we have a strong brand and marketing plan that consistently delivers new business leads, your desire to continue to grow both yours and our firm’s reputation for Commercial Litigation and Building & Construction Law in Sydney will be critical.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • 5 years + PAE;
  • experience in Security of Payment Claims, Adjudications, Commercial and Home Building Disputes in all Courts and NCAT;
  • to be able to work autonomously and as part of a team with the ability to manage your own case load;
  • a strong desire to grow your practice, contribute to the firm’s success and deliver an exceptional client experience;
  • strong legal technical, drafting and advisory skills;
  • the ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and maintain high-level attention to detail, and;
  • the ability to build and maintain positive client, team member and referral relationships.

Ideally you have, or are interested in obtaining, Specialist Accreditation in Commercial Litigation (with a sub-speciality in Building & Construction Law). We value unique backgrounds and varying life experiences. Previous building and construction industry experience is highly regarded and will be considered alongside PAE.

About the Role

At Roberts Crosbie Mortensen Lawyers, we are refining the way Legal Assistants support our team of Solicitors to increase productivity, enhance efficiency, and contribute more meaningfully to client outcomes.

This role is full-time and best suited to a career Legal Assistant who is passionate about delivering high-level legal support. If you are a Law Student or recent graduate seeking a pathway into a Solicitor role, this is not the right fit.

As a Legal Assistant in our Newcastle office, you will be proactively supporting Solicitors by:

  • Preparing legal documents, court forms, and correspondence with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Managing court filings and e-lodgments
  • Liaising with clients, courts, and external stakeholders in a professional and efficient manner
  • Diary and file management, including scheduling court dates and deadlines
  • Handling billing, invoicing, and time recording to support effective matter management
  • Ensuring all legal documents comply with our formatting rules
  • Assisting with legal research and case preparation as needed

About You

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Legal Assistant who takes pride in their work and thrives in a collaborative, high-performance environment.

You will have:

  • Experience working as a Legal Assistant in a law firm, preferably in litigation
  • A strong understanding of court processes and legal procedures
  • Exceptional attention to detail – accuracy in legal document preparation is a must
  • High-level organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ideally experience using LEAP & CLIO (or other legal firm software)
  • A proactive approach, anticipating needs and taking initiative to enhance efficiency
